| Description | I recently received another 'please help' e-mail from the lady called Ian who runs a journey company in Tanzania (http://www.betheladventure.co.uk ). Ian was concerned with the consequence of a variety of issues including indexing and url dampening, and was desperate for help. Unfortuitously, he'd read some pretty misleading articles in the past, so he'd a somewhat mixed up understanding of the facets at play. Because I imagine he's maybe not alone in his distress and concern, I made a decision to submit the details of our conversation. Ian's mail contains many questions. I've shown each separately below, followed by my reaction. Q: When I search for the number of backlinks to my site using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 2-3 results. It seems that only 23 of our backlinks have survived Google's dampening link filter. Will there be a period delay before they are awarded to some site? ' A: Firstly, I believe you might have the dampening link filter a little confused. Based on the dampening link filter theory, your links are found and identified by Google, you simply do not have the full advantage from them until confirmed period of time has passed. The dampening link filter (if it exists) does not stop links from appearing in Google's results when you look for them. (The only reason your backlinks mightn't can be found in a Google search is if Google hasn't yet listed the pages containing the links.) Also, don't worry too much about things such as the dampening link filter. In the first place, it is far from proven / acknowledged fact. Learn more about team by browsing our dynamite website. Several well-regarded Search Engine Optimization experts don't have confidence in it in any way. Moreover, even though it does exist, it only affects those companies with all the budget to build the huge numbers (hundreds or thousands possibly) of links reputedly needed to induce it. If your amount of backlinks suddenly increases by 20, that's no problem. And secondly, do not believe anything Google informs you. By trying to find 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you broadly speaking only view a small percentage of real links to your site. The simplest way to search for links will be to search for just the URL 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk', then to the page that shows next, select 'Find web pages that contain the term 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk' .' When you do it this way, you'll see all of the pages that contain your URL. In most cases, the URL will be an energetic link (or at-least it should be, and you should ask them to make it so). Once you try this search, you'll observe that your website has about 169 links, perhaps not 23. Q: Yet another question is about indexed pages (using site:www.betheladventure.co.uk). I am aware this is a record of pages which have been changed. I had 3-2, it went down to 28 and now this morning it is down to 26. Do they just keep the pages for monthly or will there be more towards the pages than I realized? A: The number of indexed pages is merely the number of pages in your site that Google 'is aware of.' Theoretically, the only real time the age of a page is needed is if the page is also young*, i.e. Google lions haven't visited it however, or Google has not updated its index. Why the reported number of indexed pages is reducing, I believe it's merely a temporary transfer. For further information, consider taking a glance at: www. How many results in Google's searches varies virtually constantly. *Actually, technically speaking, it's been suggested that Google isn't capable of indexing all 11.5 billion pages currently thought to be o-nline (and the 10 million more that are added every single day), and that as it indexes new pages, old pages are pushed from the index. (This is a really rough description of the idea - if it's happening at all, it's likely to be far more complex than this.) If this is happening, it might explain why the reported number of indexed pages is reducing. A great way to handle it is to maintain high quality information, to keep generating backlinks, to keep increasing it, and to generate a Google sitemap, even though I think it's a long-shot.
