Unequal Pavement On A Chopper - Scary! Great

Unequal Pavement On A Chopper - Scary!

Team info
DescriptionThis would not need been a problem basically can...

The other day I was using and found myself in a street paving project area. This was a task on a road with 1/2 of the 2 lanes on my side paved... and the other 1/2 getting ready for paving to carry on. The problem is that the 1/2 that was provided was the left lane and this caused a height difference "ridge" of approximately 1 - 2 inches of road between the two shelves (needless to say I was in the right "low-side" lane).

This could not have been a problem if I could have kept in the street I was in... but once to the paving place all vehicles had to merge from the proper to the left lane. Rates on this street were about 40 miles hourly and on a motorcycle this could have been scary enough! On a chopper (let alone an extensive rear tire) it was one of many scariest things I have had to accomplish. In the time before the change I tried to decelerate as much as I could in the "bumper to bumper" traffic, held the handlebars firmly, and then once there was a beginning in the traffic to move over I tried to make the "cut" at as sharp of a position as was possible.

Let me just say that "I made it" however it really was an unstable condition for some seconds. It made me remember why Driver Education schools teach you that "if your tire goes off the road... In case you need to dig up more on consumers, there are many resources you might pursue. stay off the road and slow way down... and then sharply reverse on if you have a safe margin to accomplish so" and that is in a 4-wheel CAR!

I believe that was the closest I have arrive at "going down" on a bike in more than 20 years... so, I'm writing this down so I do not forget. When you yourself have to go over and onto a form that is running parallel to the journey of travel:

Decelerate around possible (I did not do this enough).

Obtain a large safety margin between other traffic (Watch for a large opening).

Get a firm hold on the bars.

Try to cross-over the ridge at a solid direction (do not try to help relieve on the ridge). To get further information, please consider having a look at: patent pending.

Used to do not do these things well and it very nearly ended in a collision. For me personally, my biggest mistake was #1... To study more, consider having a gaze at: view site. so next time I'm faced with this I'll make sure you slow down a great deal more and obtain a better perspective on the ridge.
