Are You Able To Market Successfully Without Vision and Purpose?

Team info
DescriptionI went to lunch with a buddy last week to ask him about his company's marketing journey.

You see, I knew he and his partner had hired a marketing coach a few years right back. I needed to find out what their knowledge was like and where they'd challenges and achievements along the way.

This kind of organization is quite typical of the tiny, service-based companies that I concentrate on in my own marketing practice. They'd tell you that they are several accountants who are great at what they do and take pleasure in the clients they assist. They'd also let you know that they were not marketing individuals who knew how to build a steady flow of new business.

I asked my friend if there was a certain point in time or event that eventually triggered their advertising break-through. I needed to understand what they learned through their very own trial and error. I needed to see if there is something unique that helped them finally crack the code on marketing.

Initially he thought the solution was when they finally narrowed down their target market. They finally identified a niche that was a very good fit for them, made sense to them, and helped them remain laser beam focused. We decided that this was an enormous break-through. It's usually easy to say, but usually very hard for smaller businesses to narrow their marketplace. This was a move that was clearly paying dividends for my friend's small company.

But, it wasn't actually the answer for what helped them make their advertising break-through. After a little further discussion we found that the practice never made any marketing progress until they defined and solved their Purpose and Vision. Without a clearly outlined Purpose and Vision, the company owners can never really articulate what they were and what they were hoping to get done. A tad bit more discussion with his partner confirmed it for us. Without clarifying their vision and purpose, the business was very reactive. None of the marketing strategies or methods that their marketing coach was helping them implement turned out to be effective. The reality was they were reactively taking whatever business they might get through the doorway.

Clarifying their Purpose and Vision produced the advertising break-through. Goal and vision tell you and everyone else what it's you're out to trigger and where you want to go and what effect you want to create using the company. Achieving this gave his partner and my friend emphasis and direction that did not exist before. I-t made narrowing their marketplace and each one of these other marketing strategies and tactics make sense.

I started to think about each of my own client relationships. Some time right back I'd decided to develop vision and articulating purpose in to my ABCD Growth Marketing Model. It was a piece that appeared to be missing from effective marketing relationships and now my meal dialogue seems to have proved it for me.
